Getting the Heat Right in Your PET Blowing
If you’re swapping out lamps in a KOSME KSB 4000 or a Husky HyPET, you already know that just matching the wattage isn’t enough. It’s a common trap. The real trick is the spectral output. You need the heat to actually soak into the core of the PET preform. If it doesn’t, you’re just scorching the outside while the inside stays cold. The science of the “soak” We built these replacement lamps specifically for those high-speed cycles that put a massive strain on your gear. By tweaking the quartz and the filament density, we pushed the emission toward short-wave infrared. Why does that matter? Because short-wave energy punches through the plastic wall much faster. When the wavelength is too long, the surface overheats. That’s how you end up with that annoying “pearlescence” or cloudy look in your bottles. Short-wave heat hits the center of the plastic and gets the job done without the surface damage. Fitting them in These are simple drop-ins. We matched the OEM KSB 4000 footprint exactly, so they sit perfectly in the oven reflectors. No fiddling around. We also used high-grade quartz glass. High-speed ovens are brutal—the constant heating and cooling (thermal cycling) kills cheap glass. Plus, the connectors are precision-machined. We’ve seen way too many lamps fail because of arcing at the terminals, so we made sure these connections are rock solid. A few things to keep in mind Here’s the deal: when you increase heating power for better penetration, you’re putting more raw energy into the oven. Keep an eye on your cooling blowers. If your airflow is choked up, that extra heat density can bake the lamp ends, which eats away at the electrodes and kills the lamp early. And while you’re in there swapping them out, do yourself a favor and clean your reflectors. A dirty reflector is a waste of money. Even the best lamp in the world can’t do its job if the energy is bouncing off a grimey surface and hitting the machine frame instead of the preform. Keep them polished. Your bottles will thank you.
