Ever stepped into a bathroom with one of those infrared heaters and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? It’s a common problem. Most of these lamps use short-wave radiation to get you warm fast, but they come with a nasty side effect: an aggressive, harsh glare. It’s annoying for adults, but for a baby with developing eyes, that kind of light is just too much.
Keeping the Heat, Losing the Glare
We figured out a way to fix this by tweaking the light spectrum. Basically, we add special coatings to the quartz glass or use a filtered lens. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for your heater. These filters block out that piercing blue light and soften the overall glow, but they don’t stop the heat from reaching you. Now, there’s a catch. When you filter out light, you lose a tiny bit of heat density. To make up for that, we redesigned the filament geometry. You still get that cozy, instant warmth, but you don’t have to squint while you’re brushing your teeth.
The Nitty-Gritty Design
We use high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the “thermal shock”—that’s just a fancy way of saying the glass won’t crack when it goes from cold to scorching hot in a few seconds. We also tuned the color temperature so it feels more like a warm glow and less like an industrial warehouse. Plus, we added precision reflectors. Instead of wasting energy by heating up your ceiling, the heat is pushed straight down where it actually belongs: on you.
A Few Tips for Installation
If you’re putting one of these in, just a heads-up on the wiring. These lamps pull a lot of power the second you flip the switch. Make sure your circuits can handle that initial surge, or you’ll be tripping your breakers more often than you’d like. And one more thing: if you crank up the wattage to get extra heat, the housing can get pretty toasted. Make sure your fixture has a bit of breathing room. A little venting goes a long way in making sure the electronics don’t fry themselves.
