
Why Fast Response Actually Lowers Your Power Bill
Most engineers think “fast response” is just a fancy way of saying things heat up quickly. But in a big industrial bakery, that speed is actually where you save your money. Here’s how it works.
The problem with “heavy” heat
Standard heating elements are bulky. They have a lot of thermal mass, which means they take forever to warm up—and even longer to cool down. Ever noticed how a temperature controller cuts the power, but the oven keeps getting hotter anyway? That’s because the element is still dumping leftover heat into the chamber. You end up with a “temperature overshoot,” and then you’re wasting energy fighting that heat or just idling while you wait for things to settle. It’s a frustrating cycle. Our quartz tubes handle things differently. They don’t hold onto that excess heat. The moment you cut the current, the heat drops. Just like that. This means you can tighten up your PID loops. You aren’t guessing what the temperature will be in five minutes; you’re managing it in seconds. You only use the exact amount of power you need to hit your mark. No more, no less.
Why quartz?
We use fused quartz because it sends short-wave infrared radiation straight into the dough. It doesn’t bother heating up the entire air mass of the oven first. It’s a direct hit. But a quick heads-up: quartz is brittle. It doesn’t like being squeezed. If your oven frame expands and contracts as it heats up, it can put too much pressure on the tube and—snap—you’ve got a crack. I always suggest using floating mounts. Give the tubes some room to breathe, and they’ll last a lot longer.
Shrinking your footprint
The best part? When you switch to these fast-response tubes, you can often get away with a smaller heater footprint. Because the heat is more concentrated and reacts instantly, you can usually drop your total wattage without slowing down your production. Just make sure your wiring and contactors are up for the task, since these tubes switch on and off much more frequently than the old-school stuff.
